In this episode, we are joined by Edwin Kreuzberg, Product Manager Mobility Solutions. After completing his studies, the qualified mechanical engineer worked for a major manufacturer of shock absorbers for five years before moving to Thomas. The Product Management department to which he is currently assigned was only established a few years ago. It brings together a host of product-related tasks that had previously been handled by several departments.
As a Product Manager, Edwin provides customers with support relating to the deployment of mass-produced components. He checks whether a product may be of interest for other applications or whether modifications are necessary to meet new requirements. What is more, he takes an active approach to finding areas of application for which Thomas may be able to develop new products. „Rather than waiting for requirements documents from customers, we focus on what problems there are and how we can offer customers the best possible solution,“ explains Edwin.
A prime example of this approach is the Tank Leak Module – TLM for short. In North America, China, Japan, South Korea, and soon South America, regular vehicle tank leak monitoring is mandatory. Other systems currently available within the market are still considered prone to problems.
With this in mind, Thomas came up with the idea of creating its own control module to solve the known issues. The result is the Thomas TLM: it generates positive pressure in the tank and uses a sensor to measure whether the pressure remains constant. If the check is successful, the positive pressure is then reduced again. The concept has already caught the attention of a major German car manufacturer: it will use the TLM within the South American market.
