No sooner had he stepped off the plane than Johannes Rausch, a Field Application Engineer, sat down with Rufus in the Snackbox to explain his job. In a nutshell: making customers’ work easier from a technical perspective.
Specifically, he supports the initial commissioning and parameterization of the products. He often travels to the customer’s site for this purpose and works with their application engineers to make the necessary settings. And if problems arise, he’s there to help. He sums up the importance of this support succinctly: Even the best product is useless to the customer if it hasn’t been optimally configured.
The mechatronics engineer, hobby mechanic, and classic car enthusiast’s career path took him from the University of Applied Sciences in Gießen-Friedberg, through an internship at a sports car manufacturer, to a customer support role at a company in Siegen. From there, he moved on to a software company, where he built up a hardware division. He has been on the road for Thomas for a year and a half, visiting customers in China and Europe, and has just traveled to the U.S. for the first time, where he attended CONEXPO in Las Vegas.
Since starting his job in Siegen, travel has become a way of life for him. There’s hardly a region in the world where he hasn’t yet served clients. Different cultures, jet lag, and the responsibility of making decisions on the spot: you have to enjoy that, he says. At the same time, however, he loves the variety. Sometimes he’s with a client, other times he’s in Herdorf, working with his colleagues to figure out why a particular issue has arisen for the client. Of course, he also passes on customer requirements and feedback to product management and development. In addition to technical expertise, stress resilience and communication skills are arguably the most important qualities in his line of work. The open communication culture, Thomas’s willingness to help, and the trust placed in him here certainly help a lot.
If you want to know more about Johannes’ work or are wondering what he experienced in Las Vegas: Check out the podcast! Then you’ll also hear why, when it comes to large hydraulic systems, nothing beats a field test, and why Johannes only realized during his job interview that he had already held a Thomas product in his hands! And his favorite snack? We’ll reveal that, too, of course!
