Sport is good for our health, and much more besides. Not only does it bring people together but it also gives them opportunities to set shared targets and work towards those goals as part of a team. In 2024, many of our staff members did just that – displaying a great deal of dedication and having a lot of fun along the way. Here we take a brief look back at the sporting year.
Running shoes on, get set, go!
Thomas has a cherished tradition of participation in company fun runs. This summer, 40 employees lined up to take part in the 21st AOK Siegerland fun run. Team Thomas actively supported the runners from the sidelines – just like we did in the fall, when 21 of our colleagues donned their running shoes for the first time to tackle the Sparkassen company fun run in Bad Marienberg. Trainee Heba Alabdollah was the fastest apprentice to cross the finish line!
From sports hall to sandy surface
This year, Thomas put together a volleyball team. The members train regularly, working on their serves, jump shots, and blocks. In June, they played a match against a team from the Schäfer EMW factory. For a tournament against a team from Abus, the players swapped the volleyball court for a sandy surface: everyone was in the mood to put their energies into beach volleyball. Needless to say, there were plenty of friendly exchanges during some exciting games.
Soccer for a good cause
Football (i.e., soccer) is said to be the most beautiful pastime in the world – and Thomas would certainly agree. This spring and fall, our amateur players from Herdorf indulged their passion for the sport in the Soccer-Halle and celebrated afterwards with like-minded colleagues. The company also held an internal table soccer tournament during the European Football Championship, with 11 teams from various departments competing to win a match ball in the official championship design. Thirdly, also in June, a large number of local teams took part in a charity football tournament for the Mubea foundation in Daaden. Among them were a nine-strong team from Thomas. All proceeds from the event went to social projects, both regionally and globally.
Above-par performance
This summer, three Thomas employees who share one thing – a passion for golf – took to the green. Forming a team, they represented Thomas against a number of other companies in the second Siegerland Company Golf Cup. Their efforts met with success: under clear blue skies, they achieved an excellent fourth place!
Bringing excitement to the table
Table tennis is the second most popular sport on the planet – and loyal proponents can be found at Thomas too! This June, seven staff members attended the 11th Table Tennis Company Cup event in Haiger. With 21 companies from Rhineland-Palatinate, Hesse, and North Rhine-Westphalia registering, this year’s event welcomed a record number of entrants – and gave our team members ample opportunity to socialize with people from other companies as well as play their matches.
More day-to-day exercise
From May to the end of August, the AOK health insurance provider ran a campaign encouraging employees to cycle to work. The aim was to inspire people to leave their cars at home more often and get to work under their own steam instead. A total of 139 Thomas employees took part. We are proud to confirm that they cycled more than 35,000 kilometers between them, preventing almost seven tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere in the process!
Record-breaking generation
A total of 14 disciplines, from brain-teasers to sprints, were on the agenda at the “Azubi-Champions” event, which was organized by the Koblenz Chamber of Commerce and Industry in September. This time around, two of the 58 teams from across the region who convened at the Oberwerth stadium were representing Thomas. In total, there were 300 participants – a new record! As well as fostering networks and team spirit, the focus was on competition of the sporting kind.
